The Biogas Väst (West) programme promotes biogas as a climate friendly and renewable, locally produced fuel. It is a comprehensive solution with great potential for creating new green jobs.
In the Västra Götaland region there are a number of gas projects which range from local farm production to developing the use and technology for biogas as a generator and fuel in heavy vehicles.
The goal is twentyfive times more biogas i Västra Götaland by the year 2020, i e 2.4 TWh. The current production and use is 0.1 TWh.
Broader co-operation in new programme 2011-2013
In 2011 a new programme was formed to support the production and use of biogas (methane) as vehicle fuel not only in the Gotenburg Business region area but in the whole region of Västra Götaland. 24 million SEK are set aside for supporting the growth of biogas during the next three years by the Region Västra Götaland.
Started in 2001
Biogas Väst was founded by Business Region Göteborg in 2001, with Region Västra Götaland among the financers. The overall objective - apart from the environmental effects - was contributing to market development in three areas:
- Production of biogas for vehicles
- Distribution of vehicle gas (biogas/natural gas)
- Vehicles that run on vehicle gas
Public-Private Partnership
Biogas Väst was the world´s first regional project for biogas as vehicle fuel. In the beginning 10, now 60 participants from private and publicly owned companies, organizations, public authorities and municipal authorities make the core of this unique Public-Private Partnership.
This concept has been a source of inspiration and has been copied not only in Sweden where Biogas North, Biogas South and other regional projects have been formed, but also internationally.
