Key areas of Research and Technology Development (RTD)

Research and Technology Development (RTD) is a central part of our regional growth and development policies for Västra Götaland. The industrial competitiveness in West Sweden is based on an ability to convert knowledge into goods and services on a global market.

Region Västra Götaland invests in RTD collaborations mainly in certain areas of expertise, these being:

  • Automotive and Air Transport
  • Health, Life Sciences and Clinical Research
  • ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and Visualization
  • Energy and Environment
  • Shipping and the Maritime sector
  • Creative Industries
  • New Materials, including Smart Textiles

Life Sciences and Clinical Research

Västra Götaland is a leader in Sweden in the clinical research, with Gothia Forum as leaning support centre for clinical research and clinical trials. Other main medical RTD centres are Biomatcell, a VINN Excellence Centre of Biomaterials and Cell Therapy, and MIVAC at the University of Gothenburg. The aim of MIVAC is to foster basic and applied science in the field of mucosal immunobiology and vaccine development.

GöteborgBIO is joint project between national and regional players with the aim to create a solid base for long-term growth in the biomedical field.

Smart Textiles

Completely new types of fabrics are about to revolutionize the textile industry, which means business opportunities in the areas medical technology, furnishings, vehicles and construction. Extensive research in textile technology is conducted at the Swedish School of Textiles and the centre Smart Textiles in Borås.

Environment, Energy and Sustainable Transportation

One of the overall goals of Region Västra Götaland is that Västra Götaland shall be independent of fossil fuels by 2030, thus several strategic programs are in place to create a sustainable growth. A large proportion of innovative environmental research in Sweden is conducted by universities and colleges in Västra Götaland, often in conjunction with industry and institutions in trans-national projects. A large number of small and medium sized environmental technology companies have their base in Västra Götaland.

Shipping and Maritime sector

The shipping industry is part of the history of the Swedish west coast. We continuously work for the development of the maritime sector and support research on environmentally sustainable sea transports. There is an ongoing series of collaborative maritime related projects between industry and universities.
