Västra Götaland is Sweden’s foremost region for culture. Through dedicated effort and the country’s largest cultural budget, both in absolute terms and per capita, culture has a self-evident role in social life. Culture is a basic precondition for active, committed citizens – involvement contributes to democratic development. Culture can make people grow and is very important for employment, regional development and growth in Västra Götaland.
Region Västra Götaland’s Cultural Affairs committee drives the strategic development effort with Kulturvision Västra Götaland as the foundation. The Region drives renewal issues in the area of cultural policy – inquisitively and flexibly in order to capture the new forms of culture of our times. The committee gives assignments to 80 departments, institutions, organisations and associations and every year provides support for about a hundred. All to further strengthen the role of culture and practitioners of culture in society.
It is important that all inhabitants of Västra Götaland, wherever they live, have access to cultural experiences and are given the opportunity to participate. Several of the major institutions have permanent stages in more than one place and make tours of Västra Götaland. Region Västra Götaland also works actively to strengthen free cultural life, associations and organisations. Folk high schools and educational associations are important resources in lifelong learning, but other cultural institutions, for example museums and theatres, must also be assets in the region’s inhabitants’ development and education.
