Physical Activity

Research in this area of ISM focuses primarily on investigating the importance of physical activity as prevention and treatment of stress-related problems.

Several researchers at ISM have since the Institute started been particularly interested in studying the importance of physical activity for stress-related ill health. Our research in the field has become well known and can today be considered as one of our focus areas.

Evidence regarding the association between physical activity and mental health problems has been strengthened in recent years and there is relatively strong evidence that regular physical activity can prevent some mental health problems including depressive symptoms. Stress exposure can contribute to several mental and somatic health problems, which in turn can be prevented by regular physical exercise. Physical activity is now also regarded as an important part in the treatment of stress-related fatigue although several studies are needed to ensure the importance of physical activity in treatment.
