Laser Cleaning Workshop
Studio Västsvensk Konservering and Göteborg university will be hosting a 1-day workshop on laser cleaning by Dr Martin Cooper of Lynton Lasers Ltd. The workshop is held Tuesday, the 21st of February. It will include basic theory of laser cleaning, laser safety and a practical session.
You will have the opportunity to use Lynton Lasers’ Compact Phoenix system, a small portable Q-switched NdYAG laser cleaning system ideal for workshop or small-scale site work. The workshop will focus on the use of the NdYAG laser for cleaning sculptures and objects. It is aimed at conservators with little or no previous experience of laser cleaning – but who are keen to learn how to apply this technology to artwork conservation.You are welcome to bring your own objects or samples to test on – in general, as with all methods of cleaning, some things work and some don’t but it’s all potentially useful experience !
Lynton Lasers is a UK-based company which has been working closely with conservators around the world for over twenty-five years. Dr Martin Cooper started working with laser cleaning systems in conservation in the early 1990s. He spent twenty years working as a conservation scientist at National Museums Liverpool before moving to Lynton in 2013 to head up its conservation division.

09:00-09:30 Coffee
09 :30 – 12 :00 Theory of laser cleaning with a NdYAG laser; case studies; laser safety, Dr Martin Cooper
12 :00 – 13 :00 Lunch
13 :00 – 16 :00 Practical laser cleaning session. Participants will be divided into groups of 6 (maximum). Each group will have the opportunity to take part in a practical session with the laser and attend a special lecture on laser cleaning of gilded objects by Dr Sawicki. There will also be a chance to have a guided tour around the SVK studios.
The cost of the workshop is SEK 2 000 ( excl. VAT ) including lunch, and places are strictly limited.
