Skräddö - gateway to the Tanum world heritage site

The rest area called Tanum World Heritage Site in Skräddö opened in summer 2015 and is an exciting introduction to the World Heritage! This is the latest addition to the cultural attractions in the area and is a gateway to the World Heritage, as well as a place where you can go before or after visiting Vitlycke Museum and the rock carvings, to learn more.

As well as the normal facilities at a rest area such as toilets and places to eat your own food, there is also a very popular exhibition of the World Heritage and stunning views over the surrounding countryside.

Rock carvings, landscapes and travellers

The exhibition at the rest area takes up aspects that are not included in the exhibition at Vitlycke museum or on the information signs by the rock carvings. You can stay here before you set off into the countryside or to gain a wider perspective on the Tanum World Heritage Site.

The exhibition focuses on four aspects as starting points for the story of the Tanum World Heritage Site.

Landscape - how has the landscape changed from the day the first inhabitants came to Tanum eight thousand years ago?  From the archipelago to the present forested and cultivated landscape.

Travelling - how, when and why did people travel through the landscape?  We inform you about the Stone Age hunters in their hollowed-out boats, the railway and the E6 motorway, and what happened between these ages.

The idea of the World Heritage - why is there a World Heritage List and how was it created?  We put the Tanum rock carvings (petroglyphs) in a global context by giving other examples from the World Heritage List.

Petroglyphs - there are no rock carvings in this part of the Tanum World Heritage Site; why is that?  Here you can also experience the four most famous rock carvings through interactive panoramic images.

There is also a screen where you can click to see large and small sights around the World Heritage Site, which has around 500 rock carving locations.

Bronze Age binoculars - a unique time machine

There are few places in Tanum that have such a good view of the World Heritage area as Skräddö. A 100-metre long footbridge leads to a viewpoint from where you can see the whole cultural landscape around the Tanum plain, which is the central area of the World Heritage Site. On a clear day you can see as far as the Väderöarna Islands 22 kilometres away.

At the end of the footbridge you will find the Bronze Age binoculars. Through them you can see how the landscape has changed as it rose through land uplift, gain an impression of the huge number of rock carving places there, and see short animated films that illustrate life on a Bronze Age farm and some of the most famous rock carving images.

The facilities at the rest area World Heritage Site Tanum were funded by the Swedish Transport Administration. The World Heritage Site is administrated by three parties: The County Administrative Board, Tanum Municipality and Regional Development have funded the exhibition and other contents at the site.
