AIR Litteratur Västra Götaland announces literary residency grants

Are you working as a writer or literary translator? Do you need access to your own room? Are you looking for a peaceful work environment and new inspiration? Now you can apply for a one-month residency grant for November 2024, within the framework of AIR Litteratur Västra Götaland. You must apply before 23 April.

The residency grant includes one month of free accommodation and access to a workplace. The grant is worth 20,000 SEK. For residency grants where the host is a library or an independent actor within the cultural field, a writer’s fee of 8,500 SEK is also included for a public appearance which will be organized during the residency, in consultation with the host.

We invite applications for a total of 15 residency grants for 2024, in eleven locations throughout the Region Västra Götaland. All scholarship stays take place in November 2024.

Locations and time periods

In your application you specify which location you apply for, as your first, second and third choice. All scholarship stays take place in November 2024. The libraries and the independent actors within the cultural field offer one place each, Villa Martinson offers five places.

  • Villa Martinson in Jonsered offers accommodation and work place in one of the villa´s five apartments (five locations, Partille municipality).
  • Folkets hus in Ulricehamn (Ulricehamn municipality)
  • Konstkollektivet Mölndal (Mölndal municipality)
  • Källhult ett 6 (Mellerud municipality)
  • Scenkonst Gerlesborg (Tanum municipality)
  • Stationen i Svenshögen (Stenungsund municipality)

Applications

We accept applications from individuals involved in literature, such as writers and literary translators, from all over the world.
In 2024, we will particularly welcome applications from authors and translators active in the UNESCO network for creative cities in the field of literature, as well as authors and translators active in Sweden´s national minorities and minority languages.

Submit your application no later than on 23 April through a digital form at the end of this webbpage.

Selection

The selection of scholarship grants will take place in consultation with the reference group at the Cultural Administration Region Västra Götaland and a representative group from the host location.

This is included in the residency grant

The Cultural Administration Region Västra Götaland will pay compensation to the hosts that covers the following costs:

A grant (20,000 SEK) to the writer
A fee (8,500 SEK) to writers who make a public appearance during their residency
Compensate the host for the rental costs (15 000 SEK)
Other overhead costs for the host (2500 SEK)

The host will find suitable accommodation and a workplace, appoint a contact person and introduce the grantee to the area. If the host is a library, or an independent actor within the cultural field, the host will also, in consultation with the writer, arrange one public appearance (workshop, discussion, literary circle, seminar) during the residency.

The scholarship holder is offered free accommodation and workplace for one month and books and pays for his or her own trips to and from the residence.

When the residency is concluded, the grantee and the host shall each submit a brief report on the residency in which they describe their work, the type of public event that was arranged, the number of people who attended, and so on.

About AIR Litteratur Västra Götaland

AIR Litteratur Västra Götaland is a residency programme run by the Cultural Administration Region Västra Götaland. It is aimed at writers and translators from all over the world. The purpose is to create time and space for artistic development by offering residencies at several locations throughout the Västra Götaland region. The residencies are made possible through grants, and they focus on artistic exploration and on providing opportunities for inspiration and further development. The residencies should also be shaped by the conditions of the location and the wishes of the host.

This residency grant announcement for 2024 is taking place in collaboration with Villa Martinson in Jonsered, Alingsås Library, Bengtsfors Library, Lidköping Library, Skara Library, Värdlslitteraturhuset Library in cooperation with Kåken, Folkets hus in Ulricehamn, Konstkollektivet Mölndal, Källhult ett 6, Scenkonst Gerlesborg, Stationen i Svenshögen.

The residency at Villa Martinson will take place within the framework of the subproject AIR Litteratur vistelsestipendium. The residencies at the other ten locations are part of AIR Litteratur Bibliotek, a subproject run in collaboration with libraries throughout the region and AIR Litteratur – Plats och Kultur, in collaboration with independent actors within the cultural field in the region of Västra Götaland.

Är du verksam som författare eller översättare. Behöver du tillgång till ett eget rum. Söker du arbetsro och ny inspiration? Ansökan är stängd, välkomna att söka igen nästa år.

Vistelsestipendiet innebär en månads fritt boende och tillgång till arbetslokal. Stipendiesumman är 20 000 SEK. I vistelsestipendierna där värden är ett bibliotek eller en fri kulturaktör ingår dessutom ett författararvode på 8 500 SEK för ett offentligt framträdande som arrangeras under vistelsen, i samråd med värden.

Sammanlagt utlyser vi 15 vistelsestipendier under 2024, på elva platser i Västra Götalandsregionen. Samtliga stipendievistelser äger rum i november 2024.

Ansökan

Vi tar emot ansökningar från litterärt verksamma personer, till exempel författare och översättare, från hela världen.
Under 2024 kommer vi särskilt att välkomna ansökningar från författare och översättare verksamma i Unescos nätverk för kreativa städer inom området litteratur samt författare och översättare aktiva inom Sveriges nationella minoriteter och minoritetsspråk.

Urval

Urvalet av stipendiater sker i samråd med referensgruppen på Kulturförvaltningen i VGR samt representanter från värdplatsen.

Detta ingår i vistelsestipendiet
Kulturförvaltningen betalar ersättning till värden som täcker följande kostnader:

Stipendiesumma (20 000 SEK) till författaren
Arvode (8 500 SEK) till de författare som gör ett offentligt framträdande under sin stipendievistelse Ersätter värden för hyreskostnaden (15 000 SEK)
Övriga omkostnader för värden (2 500 SEK)

Värden hittar lämpligt boende och arbetslokal, utser en kontaktperson och introducerar gästande författare på platsen. Värden, om den är ett bibliotek eller en fri kulturaktör, arrangerar också, i samråd med författaren, minst ett offentligt framträdande (workshop, samtal, cirkel, seminarium) under vistelsen.

Stipendiaten erbjuds fritt boende samt arbetslokal i en månad och bokar och bekostar själv sina resor till och från residenset.

Efter avslutad vistelse ska både den gästande författaren och värden lämna in varsin kort rapport över vistelsen, där de berättar om arbetet, vilken typ av publikt evenemang som arrangerats, hur många som deltagit etcetera.

Om AIR Litteratur Västra Götaland

AIR Litteratur Västra Götaland är ett residensprogram som drivs av Kulturförvaltningen i Västra Götalandsregionen. Det vänder sig till författare och översättare från hela världen. Målet är att ge plats och tid till konstnärlig utveckling genom att erbjuda residens på flera platser i Västra Götalandsregionen. Residensen sker genom vistelsestipendier och fokuserar på konstnärligt undersökande arbete och ger möjlighet till inspiration och fördjupning. Vistelsen ska också vara förankrad i platsens förutsättningar och värdens önskemål.

Utlysningarna för våra vistelsestipendier 2024 sker i samarbete med Villa Martinson i Jonsered, Alingsås bibliotek, Bengtsfors bibliotek, Skara bibliotek, Lidköpings bibliotek, Världslitteraturhuset i Göteborg i samarbete med kulturhuset Kåken, Folkets hus i Ulricehamn, Konstkollektivet Mölndal, Källhult ett 6, Stationen i Svenshögen, Scenkonst Gerlesborg.

Vistelsen på Villa Martinson sker inom ramen för delprojektet AIR Litteratur vistelsestipendium. Vistelser på övriga platser sker inom ramen för AIR Litteratur Bibliotek, ett delprojekt i samarbete med regionens bibliotek och AIR Litteratur – Plats och Kultur, ett samarbete med fria kulturaktörer i Västra Götalandsregionen.
