What is the value your institution delivers to the world? What sets it apart from the crowd and makes you unique?
As events of the past two decades make clear, cultural institutions will face considerable challenges in a world increasingly characterized by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA). The long-term success and sustainability of these institutions will require major shifts in both focus and accountability. In terms of focus, institutions will need to move away from historic emphases on collections, content and didactic learning and more towards a focus on how cultural experiences can help people live better, more successful and fulfilled lives. Meanwhile, institutions will face increasing pressure to not merely assert that they provide value to the public but will need to document and substantiate their claims with actual evidence of value created.
This talk will describe an approach, based on the principles of individual and collective well-being, that can serve as the underpinning for accomplishing these kinds of major institutional shifts – both in focus and assessment.

John Falk är internationellt känd för sitt arbete inom besöksupplevelse och "fritt valt lärande", det vill säga lärande styrt av en persons behov och intressen. Framträdande i alla hans böcker är fokus på besökaren och hur besökarens välbefinnande, motivation, behov och intressen driver både själva besöken och det värde besökaren får av sina upplevelser. John är forskare och grundare av Institute for Learning Innovation och Emeritus Sea Grant Professor of Free-Choice Learning vid Oregon State University.
